Le Porteur
March 9, 2011

I recently completed a porteur style bike for Grant’s Marketplace, a great market/deli/ coffee shop in the neighborhood of South Park in San Diego. It’s an awesome locally owned store with great coffee, products and great people. The Build: Vintage Dawes frame, Campagnolo Nuovo Record components, Stronglight cranks, french style hammered fenders and racks, and plenty of custom details. Enjoy!

Porteur bicycles were popular in Paris in the early days of cycling, many were used to carry huge stacks of newspapers on their front racks for deliveries. Prior to WWII and during the war many races were held to showcase the talented couriers.

Brooks aged saddle and seat bag, Hand painted Mafac brakes, Silca pump and of course any Porteur needs a shiny brass bell.

Leather straps and brass hardware on the custom laser engraved signage…… and a bit of gold leaf on the seat stays.

Silca
February 25, 2011

“Silca is a pump maker in Milan, Italy. The Impero is one of three pumps that they have their gained great reputation on. The Impero is an extremely light weight, frame fit pump historically used for Road racing purposes only” …These pumps were always found on the classiest racing bikes back in the day. They were many times painted to match the frame. I found a collection of these old Silca pumps in varying condition as you can see. With a little bit of elbow grease I hope to get these in working order and you’ll see these on some of my custom bicycles.

Rita Hayworth…. Vavavooom!
February 18, 2011

I found an 1940 copy of Life with the beautiful Rita Hayworth on the cover with a nice little article about her staying fit by riding a bicycle. Ladies take note… ride a bike, but don’t forget to look cute.
